Last Saturday, 4th of June marks the best day of the month! Sunway Business Investment Society had organised an event. But it's no ordinary event. It's a competition! A Business competition. If you're thinking only nerds join these kinda events, YOU'RE WRONG! Because. I. Am. Certainly. Not. A. Nerd.
What makes a nerd a nerd anyways???
The other day my ex was just asking me to remind him a little of the lemon market and so I just did the best I could to explain to him in the most simplistic way I could to really make sure he got it. Talked about the car (check). Talked about asymmetric information (check). Talked about adverse selection (check). And after explaining it to him with FULL enthusiasm, you think he would appreciate right??? but no... instead he says, "wow nerd radar"
Seriously, buat baik dibalas jahat wan lorrr..
Urgh... anyways sorry for digressing. let me return to my happy thoughts. SO B.I.S. had an Inter-University Business Consultant Challenge. People from Taylors were there!!! People from MMU... Segi... UTAR... MU... HUC... It was so nerve-wrecking knowing that there are actually 12 teams in board and that the chances of winning had just slimmed down to 1/4!
The first prize is RM2000
The second prize is RM1000
and finally the third prize is RM500
3-5 people in the group. And it is these 3-5 people who are gonna determine whether you go home with pride or with pride and money :D. Everyone had 2 hours to analyse the case study, prepare the financial statements, make a decision based on the 4 options given, provide justifications for the decision made and last but not least PRESENT YOUR CASE to your clients.
2 hours and they give you not one sheet of paper. not two. BUT FREAKIN 10 OR MORE PAGES. Ok... maybe not 10. Haha. There was certainly no time to count. But I can assure you it was one stack of papers. And these case studies were taken from ICAEW (an accounting professional paper.. one I aspire to pursue after my degree).. so you can say I was pretty excited about it :)
My team members: Candy Lee, Siew Ming and Tee Hui Yii. We were the second to enter the hall to register. But... we were the first to present. Why? Because Hui Yii has lucky fingers. Mr.Tan was saying that first place always lose wan... but he also mentioned if we played it well we could win ;) and that was exactly what happened :P

From the left: Mr.Tan, Candy Lee, Siew Ming, Hui Yii, Me :D, Dr.Foo
Haha.. okay we didn't get first or second but third is not bad right? haha I felt it was good enough. Good enough to make me feel proud of myself. Good enough for my parents feel proud of me. But I got to say it was a team effort. Because even though I had experience this type of competition previously, the BIS members who were aware of this, changed the game. The little surprises they put along the way [(like a phone call in the middle of the game, inviting our company to join some ethical award ceremony and now we have to comply with 4 requirements?!%$!) and (the mandatory financial statements we have to prepare)] were meant to scare us to our graves but SURPRISE SURPRISE ;) we didn't crack abit.
I think I have to say I was very lucky. I had Candy to prepare accurate financials. Hui Yii to keep work strategically fast and moving. Siew Ming makes the most awesome powerpoint slides under pressure. And I still have the most terrible stomachaches before a great presentation.
Can you imagine... I just went to the loo for a minute only. When I got back, before I can even look at my cue cards for the one last time, it was our turn already! Like seriously... I just went and bomb japan and there's nothing in me anymore and they expect me to go to war without ammo. lol ok that's a disgusting example but you get what i mean right? :P
but the bigger BUT is.. lucky for all our practices :) our mini toasty club really gave me the courage and confidence to speak up there.

8 seconds before penalty.
haha don't worry. I managed to say thank you by the 5th second :P
And in the end, with all our specialties in the pot... the magic we've created with each other... I've got something extra hanging on my wall now.

satisfaction.
Thank you Team Sunniers <3
